Nepal is distinctly known as the world of colorful vibrant festivals. Most of the festivals celebrated in Nepal have religious connotation and some are based on important events from ancient mythology and epic literature.

Nepalese have diverse beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. Despite these facts, all unite in the celebration of the year’s major festivals.

The Nepalese celebrate spring and the New Year by throwing vermilion powder over each other during the Sindoor Jatra Festival.

During the festival, devotees gather and take out a procession carrying 32 chariots containing the idols of several gods and goddesses. People smear each other with Sindoor (orange vermillion powder) and sing and dance to the tune of traditional music during the procession.

On the outskirts of Kathmandu in Thimi, Nepalese devotees throw vermilion powder over each other during Sindoor Jatra festival, celebrated to welcome the advent of spring and the New Year of the official solar calendar of Nepal.
